I disagree completely with the first 6. I agree wholeheartedly with the last 2.

Are Pike’s actions reprehensible? Absolutely. Will harassing him change anything? Will it make Pike more empathetic? Will it make him more apologetic? Will it make him, or others in the police force, less likely to use pepper spray when it is unnecessary? Of course not.

All it will do is make him angry. To be blunt: Knowledge doesn’t come from anger. We are not fighting against Lt. Pike. We are not fighting against the police force. We are not even fighting Wall Street. We, and when I say we I don’t merely mean the Occupiers, I mean The Citizens of the United States of America, are trying to fix a system. We are part of that system. The police are part of that system. Wall Street is part of that system.

It will not be fixed by treating other people as “enemies.” As soon as you call someone else an enemy, as soon as you raise your voice, as soon as you fall back on childish pranks, then both sides fall into a closed loop of escalating vitriol. Then, nothing gets fixed.

Let me be clear: Pike should be fired immediately, without benefits. The U.C. Davis campus police department should know how you feel. They will listen. You may have to repeat yourself, calmly, patiently, and frequently, but they will listen.

But yelling at John Pike, or others like him, will just make you feel slightly more righteous without changing anything.
